Yulong Snow Mountain

First day in Yunnan. Travel-worn, we made our way to this place.

The weather was fine, but almost everything was backlit, as if we stood on the far side of the sun.

Wild land, and clean air.

And the birds wintering here, from Siberia, they say.

Snow mountain, so near, and so far.

Because the climate has warmed, Yulong holds very little snow now. Its slopes are bare.

But there I met the master who taught me how to photograph. The words he gave me have stayed, still vivid.

Photography is subtraction, not addition. Not the more the better; only enough for what you need.
