Yulong Snow Mountain

First day in Yunnan. Travel-worn, we made our way to this place.

The weather was fine — but almost everything was backlit, as if we stood on the far side of the sun.

Wild land, and clean air.

And the birds wintering here — from Siberia, they say.

Snow mountain — so near, and so far.

Because the climate has warmed, Yulong holds very little snow now. Its slopes are bare.

But there I met the master who taught me how to photograph. The words he gave me have stayed — still vivid.

Photography is subtraction, not addition. Not the more the better — only enough for what you need.
